Kulliyat-i Zafar
By Muhammad Bahadur Shah II (1775-1862) - The King of Delhi
Published by Laknou Munsh Naval Kishor
(In Urdu)
Regarded as one of the greatest Urdu poets in the history of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar wrote a large number of Urdu Ghazals most of which were lost during wars fought in the year 1857. Yet, many of them were saved and were later on compiled as KULLIYAT-I-ZAFAR. His Ghazals are a beautiful collection of words that spell magic and are read with awe and admiration even today.

Youtube video : Story of Bahadur Shah Zafar Grave in Yangon Myanmar, Reported by Soomro, Ayaz Gul for KTN. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pUZdP53mu8
The Last Mughal, The poet King of Delhi, The scion of Genghis Khan and Amir Timur was tried in his own Red Fort by British (who had sworn allegiance to him) and exiled him to Rangoon. He died there at 05:00am on 07NOV1862 (2 days before today) and was buried in an unmarked grave by 04:00pm. "Itna hai badnasib 'Zafar' dafn ke liye, do gaz zamin bhi na mili ku ae yaar mein."
kitna badnaseeb hai ZAFAR dafn key liye do gaz zameen bhee na mili ku ae yaar main.......
Bahadur Shah Zafar had a Hindu Mother he was a secular person who had banned Coe Slaughter in Delhi. He played Holy in Red Fort and also went to temples. The Mullahs were so angry with him that they had almost declared him a non Muslim and also banned him from praying at Jamma Masjid.
His Grave stands in Rangoon today where he is revered as a Saint. His last wish was to be buried in India and its unfortunate that Indian Govt has not taken any initiative to get his grave back to India
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi did visit his grave in Rangoon. How can Bahadur Shah Zafar's remains be brought back to India when the present day 'ulemas' frown on exhumation? But we must remember that Queen Mumtaz Mahal was buried in a temporary grave in Burhanpur for a few months before her body was brought back in state (escorted by Prince Shah Shuja) to Agra for her final burial in the Taj Mahal. And also, Emperor Zahiruddin Babar died in Agra (was most likely buried in a temporary grave in Rambagh) and his body was then taken to Kabul for final burial. It would be nice though if Bahadur Shah's remains were brought back to Delhi.
I'd agree with you Asad. But then Govt of India would have to build a tomb and someone will have to make some money via kickbacks. :)
Pulin: Is it compulsory to take kickbacks from Government-sponsored projects? In that case, Bahadur Shah would be better off staying where he is.
Love Ghulam Ali's rendition of Bahadur Shah's Dard- e- dil dard -e-aashna
Its not Common among muslims to be reburied but its not an exception there are many cases. Mumtaz Jahangirs wife is one example and other eg is Babur who was also reburied in kabul
Sameer: Mumtaz Mahal (Arjumand Bano) was not Jahangir's wife. She was his daughter-in-law, that is, Shah Jahan's wife.
Jahangir's favourite wife was Mehrunissa later given the title of Nur Mahal and still later, Nur Jahan. Her first husband was Sher Afghan Istajlu who was given a fief in Burdwan by Jahangir's father Akbar to get Mehrunissa away from Jahangir. Upon ascending the throne in 1605, Jahangir appointed his brother-in-law Aziz Khan Koka as Subahdar of Bengal and got Sher Afghan murdered to get Mehrunissa.
Gentlemen the last Mughal emperor is revered as a Sufi saint in modern day Rangoon.I do not think any of you would want his remains to be shifted to India in the light of the above !
well said bhai.. but the one should also keep in consideration the last wish
It would be nice if he is brought back to Delhi. There is no need to have a special tomb built since he could be buried inside Humayun's tomb. What I'm not sure of is if his Rangoon grave is auhentic since the British Guards were careful to put him in an unmarked grave. DNA fingerprinting would be necessary.
Came across an interesting couplet that was written in the tie of Bahadur Shah 'Zafar' that aptly portrays the helpless situation of 'Zafar': "Khalak Khuda ki, Mulk (Muluk) Shehenshah ka, Hukum Company Bahadur ka."
very nice
Sayed Aftab Meerzha: :)) Thanks.
