Quite a report. It reminded me of a trip/trek/rafting I had made to the Badrinath/Nanda Devi/Rishikesh area in 1973. Garhwal has a rugged beauty. For a truly inspiring view, you should visit the Nanda Devi Inner Sanctuary (Lat N 30deg 25 min, Long E 79 deg 54 min). The sanctuary, in the Garhwal Himalayas, is a unique geographical feature: a profusion of peaks connected by massive ridges, which dip no lower than 17,000 feet, form an enormous amphitheater of 250 square miles, from a base camp at 13,000 feet! The only exception is the point where the Rishi Ganga which drains this great basin emerges to the West in one of the most terrific gorges in the world. In this ring of mountains are at least twelve peaks over 21,000 ft: Nanda Devi (25,000 feet), Sakram (21,000 ft), Deo Damla (22,000 ft), Mangraon (22,000 ft), Kalanka (23,000 ft) and Changabang (23,000 ft). Towards the south lie peaks like Maiktoli (23,000 ft), Devtoli (22,000 ft), Devistan (22,000 ft), Panwali Dwar (22,000 ft) and Nanda Khat (22,000 ft). The first edition costs £1800 : http://www.peterharrington.co.uk/store/travel-exploration/product/journal-of-a-tour-through-part-of-the-snowy-range-of-the-himala-mountains/

I think a series of these were used for a med. company's calender. still have them somewhere !!

Thanks to Google Earth, one can search the origins of these two great rivers (as also the Indus and Brahmaputra) in the comfort of his/her room.

But the beauty of our great rivers has to be seen !! the indus on the road to leh , the narmada at Maheshwar , the teesta in sikkim...............................
