Lynne, these are not available for download right?
Thanks Lynne.....will post all these wonderful books soon.
Arvind, they most certainly are. :)) This is where I get all my books from. :))
There are so many fabulous books out there. I was actually looking for a book which has the costings of the work on the Taj, as well as names of those who worked on the building. I'm hoping that the references might be in these books, else I shall have to keep digging!! :))
I should mention that I have read the said references before, but lost my copy of the book when my old computer diied. Please do put me out of my misery if you stumble upon these, and post a link?!! :))
Lynne : Are you referring to the book with details of Taj Mahal?
Yes, that's the one. I can't for the life of me remember its name...one of the penalties of growing old!! :))
Any clues....about the title, author etc. It cant be Fanny Parks ?
No, I think that it was written by either one of the very early travellers in India (perhaps even Bernier, but I haven't had a chance to check...editing here), or alternatively, that it was some sort of journal. I shall have to recharge my braincells!! :))
I have been meaning to ask...have you read "The Rose Goddess" by Lady Russell? It's about James Archilles Kirkpatrick & Khair-un-Nissa Begum's daughter, Kitty Kirkpatrick. It has a very charming picture of Kitty as an adult in it, and is on archive.org :))
I'm reading it at the moment. Also, Strachey's "The Romantic Marriage of Major James Achilles Kirkpatrick, Sometime British Resident at the Court of Hyderabad", in "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine". The most beautiful letter in here, from Kitty's grandmother. So sad, though. I can't remember the volume number offhand, but shall find it tomorrow. :))
Lynne : Both Bernier and Tavernier have mentioned Taj Mahal in their Journals. In fact Tavernier is supposed to have even witnessed the construction of the Taj. Both these books have been posted on RBSI earlier.
My familiarity with the Kirkpatrick's is only through the White Mughals of Dalrymple.
Fantastic...it must be Tavernier, as I don't think it's Bernier. I lost Tavernier when my old computer died, so shall have to fox it out again. :))

Speaking of wanderings in India: I apologise in advance for the length of this post, but I have been researching for my new book and folllowing is a list of books relating to the Mughal empire, and visitors to the Mughal court...for those who are interested in the interaction between Europeans & Indians in these early times. Thank you, thank you, thank you.....a million times over!! :))
Consider it a payback for posting Rory McEwen. : )
Thank you!! Rory's letter was priceless, wasn't it? I love his paintings, of course, but could never afford to buy one...sigh!! :))
It would be worthwhile to campaign for a posthumous Book Prize for him ! If such a category doesn't exist...time to create one ?
As an afterthought....a single letter might not be sufficient to qualify! : )
Oh, what a sweet thought!! But I think that you are right about the letter....if only he had a book full of them, a la Emily Eden!! :))
Typo : I meant Booker Prize. : )
Oh, my computer is stupid too...keeps making typos!! :))
