I simply must read this!! James Skinner CB had an indigo factory, which from memory, was managed by his son, Joe. :))

Lynne, you seen to know so many families of the Raj. I'm sure you must have read "My India" by Jim Corbett, I like the old travelogues of British and other travelers into India and have a few old books with me. There is also the Hakluyt Society with some good old books but they are expensive and not many in pdf format like here. I love this site for their offerings. Have you read "Bugles and Curry" Anglo-Indian cook book, nice compilation of old Anglo-Indian recipes.

I haven't read it, Arvind, although I've heard of it. I do love all the voyages published by the Hakluyt Society. Did you know that they are downloadable from projectgutenberg? Also, from memory, from www.archive.org. I have downloaded many of Robert Kerr's "Voyages" series too. :)) I shall have to take a peek at "Bugles and Curry"...if there's one thing I like, Arvind, it's eating curry!! :))

You will love that book and the author lives (or used to) in San Diego. She was the last of the Raj children to leave India and come West. Nice book with a mix of India and British recipes, some of them I used to eat when I was growing up in India and one of the cooks was Goan and in a cook in British home.

i have to read this one given my interest in indigo! what a find ! Lynne, where was the skinner factory?
