General Claude Martin's house Constantia set in its park at Lucknow - 1814.
Watercolour of Constantia in Lucknow from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Cawnpore to Mohumdy Vol. IV' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r. 1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15.
La Martiniere (Constantia) was built by Frenchman Claude Martin (1735-1800) in 1795, though he died before its completion in 1802. This example of European architecture later influenced the developement of hybrid Indo-European architecture in Lucknow in the 19th century. Initially designed as a country house, it is used as a school for boys. View of Claude Martin's house set in its park at Lucknow, with its column in the lake still in scaffolding. Inscribed below: 'House of Constantia and Tank with general Martin's monument in an unfinished State.'

Where did they get all that money from?

Really Helle .Mr Julian Craig would be delighted to view this image ofEuropean magnanimity to the indigenous population ! I wonder how many servants this "country home" employed and the artist accompanied him on a trip from Calcutta to Delhi to illustrate the journey .fortunate artist and fortunate for us that we have images like this to view today

Yvonne : I have come to realize that Seeta Ram is probably one of least known (for obvious reasons) but one of the truly gifted artists of the time. Just look at each of his paintings....they are simply exquisite. I had not even heard of him, until I started the RBS posts !! You will see many more of his paintings on this wall.

RE: 'magnanimity' ...Claude Martin willed that 'Constantia' should become a school for boys of any religion, and he also left money to start schools in Calcutta and Lyon, all to be called La Martiniere. The Lucknow school opened in 1840....

Interesting ...so he gave back which is wonderful

AND I think Seeta Ram was a gifted artist ...and he has much company in these wonderful old history books

Wow, this is the original La Martinear College, Lucknow!
