Prince Murad Bakhsh and Prince Aurangzeb
Mughal India, about 1630

Opaque watercolour and gold on paper.

The two portraits of Mughal princes have been pasted to the same page and overpainted. On the left Murad Baksh, Shah Jahan's youngest son, wears pearls strung with emeralds and rubies, a pearl and gold pendant and two gold armbands set with jewels. By contrast, Aurangzeb's jewellery is moreconservative - a small emreald and pearl pendant, a shot pearl necklace and pearl and ruby earrings.
