The Ganges below Gangotri - 1867

This chromolithograph is taken from plate 43 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern'. Gangotri is situated in the Tehri District of North Uttar Pradesh, near the source of the Ganges, and in this stretch the river winds between rocky walls up to 300 feet high. There are few trees at this height and the ground is steeply inclined towards the rocky, snow-covered summits of the Himalayan mountains.
