Portable shrine of Vishnu as Venkateshwara
Tirupati, late 18th century - early 19th century

Portable shrines of this kind were used by travelling priests who narrated the stories of Vishnu and his incarnations. The shrine has extendable folding doors painted with scenes of Vishnu in his various forms, the stories of Rama and Krishna and other subjects.

Absolutely wonderful! What is it doing in a museum outside India???

Waoooww!!

Yeah why is it in the possession of Oxford instead of Madras University ?? India needs to make an effort to get back artifacts of our culture......Entrance fees on Museums set up with these Gems, can feed the poor and improve the infra structure :-)

Wow!! Beautiful!!

@latha---atleast it is safe and still available. Refer RBSI on the pathetic state of old artefacts and papers in our great country
