Such paintings seem to have been collected by English officers and tourists to take back to Britain. These paintings were painted on mica and often came in large albums. Subjects incuded castes and occupations of India, flora and fauna of India, religious occasions and so on. Trichinopoly was an important centre for painting such pieces- others include Patna.

Quite like the charakh festival of Bengal. Have seen similar paintings of that.

Yes I too have seen many "hook swinging" illustrations in the EIC era books
