Ancient pillar found in Fort, Allahabad - 1870

Photograph of a carved stone column in Allahabad, from an Album of Miscellaneous views in India, taken by Thomas A.Rust in the 1870s. Allahabad, located on the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna, is an important place of Hindu pilgrimage. The fort was built from 1583 onwards by Akbar (r.1556-1605). In front of the gateway to the fort is the Ashoka Pillar, which was originally erected in the 3rd century BC by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, and was moved to Allahabad by Akbar. This is a view of an ancient stone column which was found in the fort at Allahabad.
