Born in Maharashtra, Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922) became a lecturer and founded the Arya Mahila Somaj to promote women's education and prevent child-marriage. She converted to Christianity, and published The High-Caste Hindu Woman, which presented a sharp critique of caste and gender divisions in Hindu society. Her travels to the U.S. between 1886-1888 were the subject of a Marathi travel memoir.
