This painting depicts so much action! While the Emperor dispatches one lioness , another beast is about to leap on the man who is climbing a tree in terror - little knowing that there's still another lioness sitting on a top branch of the very tree! Seems to be a true account of one of the hunts.

that looks like two monkeys in the tree the one huntsman is climbing

That's a monkey up the tree, not a lion.
