The Brits were scholar soldier/administrators. The "Imperial Gazetteer of India" alone (God knows how many volumes it runs into) - and that is just one example - is enough to keep one fascinatedly occupied for many lifetimes. There's nothing remotely to match post-independence.

@James, I could not agree more. These pre-Independence gazetteers lie in our libraries gathering dust, its a pity. I got some very valuable information from one of these for my research on pastoralists of western India.

In India,as well as in Pakistan, the past is being constantly vandalised and obliterated for commercial,ideological reasons,or for sheer ignorance.It is an initiative that I appreciate andwould like to be a part of it.
