Exterior view of large Buddhist Chaitya Hall (Cave XII) and adjoining group, Bhaja Caves, Pune District - 1885

Photograph of the exterior of the Buddhist Chaitya Hall (Cave XII) and adjoining group at Bhaja Caves, Pune District, taken by Henry Cousens around 1880, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. At Bhaja, south of Karli, there are more than twenty rock-cut Buddhist monasteries from the Satavahana period. The Great Chaitya or prayer hall (Cave 12) dates from the 2nd century BC. The facade has a wide horseshoe-shaped entrance. Inside the hall the nave and aisles are separated by octagonal columns. A hemispherical stupa is situated at the end of the nave.

Thanks for this, it's wonderful!

RBSI the accompanying Image is of Bhaja caves near Lonavala in Pune District. How its related to Andhra Pradesh?

Nitin Ashok Bhagawat: This book starts with the Satavahana empire... and this temple was build by the Satavahanas. Obviously the ancient geography was quite different from what we are familiar with today.

If this is the cave that I visited about three years ago then there is large, haphazard structure housing an " ancient temple" that half blocks the entrance!!!!!
