" Historic truth has, in all countries, been sacrificed to national vanity - to its gratification every obstacle is made to give way - facts become fictions [ and then all but ] vanish in a mirage of the imagination ..." ~ Lt. Col. James Tod ( Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, 1829 )
While Col Todds "annals and antiquities" continue to be a chief source of knowledge, at the same time, I feel sad that multiple historical works in royal and other libraries in Rajputana have continued to be neglected since Col Todd and no one since has attempted a work on the scale of Col Todds effort.
Today's version of the Todd's Annals and Antiquities are much better as the footnotes suggrst where the author may have taken liberty with the truth and has engaged in eulogies and encomium. Todd wrote glowingly where he was accorded a royal welcome. He was even granted a jagir and the fortress still goes by the name of Todd-garh ! His chronicling of festivals and topography is however laudable. His comparison of the Rajputs as a race to the ancient Scythians on account of the prevalence of 'fire worship' ( in his words) is however taken today with a grain of salt. All in all his annals are a delight to read.
@ Satyakam Sudershan , could you give the idea where these sources probably in Persian on Rajputana is available...
