The opening paragraph of this book : " The most important facts of our time are that the needs of Governments are constantly growing without a moment's pause - and that the taxpayer's are ever demanding a more equitable distribution of public burdens..." ... seems remarkably contemporary ! But then again, complaning about taxation is a past-time that is as old as the hills... or as old as the ' central state ' at any rate...

Almost 7% of revenue derived from taxing salt! A rare glimpse of the ethics, politics and economics of the early 1900s. Not that things are any better now ... different for sure ... although similar gripes.
