Cave Temple at Ajanta
1931
By Yoshida Hiroshi , (Japanese, 1876 - 1950)
Showa era

Woodblock print; ink and color on paper

Japan

Yoshida visited the caves at Ajanta in the present-day Indian state of Maharashtra, where Buddhist monasteries and temples were carved into the rock from about 200 B.C.E. to the early sixth century C.E. Yoshida's print appears to be a free rendering of the facade of Cave 1, which dates to to the late fifth century. The interior is lavishly decorated with Buddhist wall paintings which are of great importance as documents of early Indian painting.
