Photograph of the sculpture of a seated Nagaraja figure in the Buddhist chaitya hall, Cave XIX at Ajanta, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections: India Office Series. The photograph is credited to Henry Cousens, but it was probably taken by James Burgess, to whom it is credited in the lithographed version reproduced in James Fergusson and James Burgesss, 'The Cave Temples of India' (London, 1880), plate 39. Cave 19 is an elaborate rock-cut chaitya hall from the late 5th century. The external facade has a large horseshoe-arched window flanked by figures of yakshas and Buddhas carved in relief. The sculpture in this view represents a Naga couple seated on a rock and is situated on the left wall of one of the side cells.
