Only an absolute idiot would come on an elephant to elope :) And it would be a very foolish maiden indeed, who accompanied such an idiot :) The elephant even has jingling bells on neck and belly not to mention noisy clanking chains! I have never heard of such a noisy lumbering elopement, he he he :) This portrait is just artist's imagination, that's all. But it's nice.

The bells and chains are definitely an artist's impression, however many will be surprised to know that elephants, regardless of their enormous size can be very stealth in their movement. I was surprised to learn about this first hand during my time in Rajaji Park in the Tehri Garhwal region. I agree with Gouri-ji, it must be related to a historical legend or an incident.

Oh yes, and they are super fast as well...something I learned while there too.
