Image details : View of the west end of St John's Church, Calcutta, showing houses fronting onto the churchyard and the Rohilla monument - 1830 Watercolour of the west end of St. John's Church in Calcutta by Amelia Rebecca Prinsep (1798-1860) dated c.1830. Inscribed: 'Calcutta. From W. Prinsep by E.R. Prinsep' and on the original mount: 'William's House. Charles's House St John's Church'. This watercolour shows the houses fronting onto the churchyard and the monument to the Rohilla campaign of 1794. William Princep notes in his memoirs that he moved to '.... 1 Gustin's Buildings, the house in the churchyard belonging to my wife's family'. This move took place sometime between 1827 and 1830. Number 1, Garstin Buildings is the house immediately next to the Rohilla monument. The house was named after John Garstin, the architect of the Town Hall in Calcutta. Another entry in William's memoirs mentions 'Thoby's office and residence was within a few doors, and Charles removed his own office from the Chandpal Ghat house to the lower rooms of the same house, so that we were all near enough for very frequent meetings ....'. Have been to St. John's several times in the late 1950s . The Vicar at that time , Rev. Pothen, was a good friend of my parents . One of these visits, in late 1959 , was for a worship service, presided over by the visiting Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Geoffery Fisher.
