Amita Roy, The Roma (or Gypsies) also speak Romani which has roots in Sanskrit and I have a old book which has a section on the root word for many of the Romani words. The Roma are related to the Indian Gypsies and some say to Punjabi Kshatriya (Rajputs) or warrior class one entire band was cutoff by the invading Ghori/Ghazni (?) and they drifted West.
Thanks RBSI for the download!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful book on Sir George Birdwood's birth anniversary today.
Isnt that such an amazing coincidence !! : )
Amita: It is not only the gypsies of Spain and Portugal but the entire Nordic population that is related to the ancient Aryans. The Hanseatic League (derived from the sanskrit word "Hansa", like swastika) has the same roots in the purest form. In Stockholm, I saw a small restaurant named "Restorang Indira". I inquired from the owner what was the origin of the name 'Indira'. He said "Old Swedish, old Swedish".
Very interesting details about Aryan tribes, Swastika and Hansa.
The tribal people of Ooty (Ootacamund in Tamil Nadu) the 'Thodas' are said to have Roman links, as there dress and habits are somewhat akin to the old Romans.
Yes Todas have some similatity with Roman dressing style. Scholars say that the Todas are of Turanian or Scythian descent.
One has to be a little more careful while using terms such as 'Aryan tribes' or 'Semitic tribes' because there is a large overlap between them. In fact labels having archaeological imprint such as Saka, Amorite, Dahae etc. are preferable to worn out blanket terms such as 'Semite' or 'Indo-European' which have a linguistic sense.Learned scholars have pointed out that the god Yava of the RgVeda may be the same as the so-called Semitic god Yahweh. I have pointed out that Rishava of the Sanskrit texts matches the 'Semitic' god Resheph. The Sumerian Mar.tu echoes the Sanskrit Martah (world of mortals).
I have also written, perhaps a little enthusiastically, that the Swastika symbol corresponds to the four-fold Kaya Sadhana of the Tantras. This can be seen in Mesopotamian art from Tell Asmar. Thomas McEvilley also sees Tantric influence in the symbol and traces it in the Indus culture and Mesopotamia (1700 B.C.).
Aryan tribes were brainchild of British imperialists to put India down
It is not unusual to blame the British for everything that is wrong in India. How far can history be rewritten, specially on the RBSI?
The terms "Aryan", "Semitic", "Dravidian" are not inventions of British 'imperialists' - except in the minds of some politicians in India. All historic, linguistic, genetic, archaeological and anthropological evidence points to that.
The fact remains that some of the greatest historians and archaeologists of the last century were British. They may have made mistakes, but who does not? Prof. A. K. Narain, whom I recently met, criticised some aspects of Sir Mortimer Wheeler's writing but he himself was full of praise for him. D. D. Kosambi, who was my guru, also accused Sir Mortimer Wheeler of Imperialist sentiments but I see Wheeler as one of the best writers on Indian antiquity. Should Max Muller, who was, in a sense, British, and who wrote much on the Aryans be called an imperialist writer ? I think not. But one can sense a British trait in the work on the Aryans by scholars such as R.S. Sharma.
The point that I am trying to make is that the Amorites can be seen not only as Vedic 'Aryans' but also the so-called 'Semites'. "Thy mother was a Hittite and thy father an Amorite" said Ezekiel. I do not think we can exclude the Sumerians from the ambit of the 'Aryans'. This was suspected by the great E. A. Speiser.
