The first time I read Kim i was baffled with the opening sentences, why such strange a language? Then it slowly dawned on me, that was the literal translation of the 'bazaar urdu', and what a translation! what a book!
One the old family pics that I have is of my father standing near the Zam Zamah (this siege piece), in the 1920s. Jumping up and down the cannon and clanging its rings seems to have been done by every self-respecting child in Lahore.
