The hill fort of Deogarh, circumvallated, with walls ascending the left side, with further hills beyond - 1818
Watercolour of the hill fort of Deogarh, by an anonymous artist working in the Calcutta style, part of the Hastings Albums, c. 1818. Inscribed below: 'A view of the Fort of Deogurh. No. 3.'
Deogarh is located in the modern state of Madhya Pradesh. The site is most famous for beautifully carved Hindu sculptures depicting scenes from Vishnu's life. These were found in the Dashavatara temple and are some of the most famous Gupta sculptures in India. Deogarh is also home to a group of Jain temples dating to the 9th and 10th Centuries, situated inside the fort. This drawing shows the hill fort, with walls ascending the left side and further hills beyond. The foregound is broken up into ravines, with cultivated land beyond leading up to the hill.
