Encampment below the hill fort of Govardhangiri, Shimoga (Mysore) - April 1806

Water-colour painting of an encampment below the hill fort of Govardhangiri in the Shimoga district of Karnataka (Mysore) by an unknown artist, April 1806. Inscribed on the front in pencil is: 'April 1806. Mar 31, 1816.'

The fortress of Govardhangiri is set on a hill 1,720 feet high in the Ghats. It overlooks the village of Gersoppa which gives its name to the famous Gersoppa Falls. The original fort is said to have been erected in the 18th century by Jinadatta Raya who named it after the celebrated hill Giri Raj in northern Muttra from where he came.
