Digital Rare Book :
On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures
By Charles Babbage
Published by J.Murray, London - 1846

In this eminently readable historical account, Charles Babbage surveys manufacturing practices including printing and publishing, and discusses the political, moral and economic factors affecting them. His scientific analysis and promotion of mechanisation and efficient 'division of labour' still resonate strongly for modern industrial engineering and manufacturing industries.

Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, 1871. This was the first fully-automatic calculating machine. Charles Babbage (1792-1871) first conceived the idea of an advanced calculating machine to calculate and print mathematical tables in 1812. This machine was designed to evaluate any mathematical formula and have even higher powers of analysis than his original 'difference' engine. Only part of the machine was completed before Babbage's death in 1871. This is a portion of the mill with a printing mechanisim. http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/images/I031/10301732.aspx
