The tomb and garden of Itimad al-Daulah at Agra - 1815

Watercolour of I'timad al-Daulah's tomb from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Agra to Barrackpore Vol. X' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r.1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15.

Idealised view of the tomb and garden of I'timad al-Daulah at Agra. This tomb was built by Nur Jahan, the favorite wife of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (r.1605-27) in memory of her father Mirza Ghiyath Beg. A white marble rectangular building, the tomb stands in a garden on a stone platform situated on the banks of the river Jumna opposite the Fort-Palace complex. In the central chamber are the tombs of Itmad-ud-Daula and his wife. The delicately carved marble screens give a gentle light to the interior while inlaid pietra dura work adorns the walls and floors. The tomb is set within a charbagh, or four-fold, garden. Inscribed below: 'Etmudoo Dowlah's Tomb opposite to Agra.'
