Open Mandapa of the Surya Temple, Modhera, Gujarat - 1885
The Surya Temple at Modhera, one of the grandest architectural achievements of the Solanki dynasty in Gujarat, was built in 1027 and although in ruinous condition in this photograph its former splendour is evident. The temple consists of a sanctuary with a closed adjoining hall or mandapa, and an open-pillared mandapa, all aligned to the east and built on a stepped plan. In the closed mandapa tall, elaborate pillars are arranged to form an octagon. The open-pillared portico has four entrances with ornamental intricately carved toranas and beautifully carved columns and brackets with miniature figures and scrollwork. The temple has since undergone extensive restoration.
