Digital Rare Book :
On the Education of the People of India
By Charles Edward Trevelyan
Published by Longman, Orme, Brown, Green & Longmans, London - 1838
RBSI how can you not expect to foment conflict by posting this? You must know that there have been riots in Kolkata about this book.
Really ?...but then, I suppose none of the rioters would have read this book, as it generally happens. When did the riots take place ?
I am all the more curious to read this book now !
Yes, really, outside the offices of The Statesman, in which someone had written a review of a contemporary reprint. It was around 1968. Surely you don't expect all your FB followers to read the whole book in digitized form before they discuss it here?
I would never know how many read or download these books. But the FB Insights indicate that there have been around 3300 'daily active users' for this page from quite some time.
Exactly- you never know who is reading the material and who is just reacting to the intro. Of course reading the material is no guarantee that it will not annoy.
You can only take a horse to the water...
Or bring water to the horse..
Sorry, but what was the objection of the rioters?
If I recall correctly, he was closely allied with Macaulay (the two families remained close and mutually supportive throughout the British period) and had said of Hindus and Muslims that one community was more easily educated than the other- and this was discussed in The Statesman in a book review or editorial.
