Court House, Calcutta - 1851
A hand-coloured print of the Court House, Calcutta, from the Fiebig Collection: Views of Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. The Supreme Court House on Esplanade Row was opened in 1782 and Sir William Jones, the great scholar and orientalist, was judge here from 1783 until his death in 1794. Both criminal and civil cases were heard here for Indians and Europeans and the court also had jurisdiction over appeals from Europeans within the Calcutta Presidency.
