oh! ...how they used to get there?

Such an amazing book - perhaps one can really think of leaving everything and travelling to every part of our amazing country and experiencing the brilliant flavours of the past! Your site is the best!! Thank you for the books and the images you post!

Bhongir fort near Hyderbad is similar...built atop a huge rock, smooth as an egg!

The Gingee Fort occupies an important place in the history of South India so it was nice to see that the RBSI has posted this book. I have been curious about this Fort since it was taken only after an unusually long siege (of eight years) by the Mughal army of Aurangzeb under Zulfiqar Khan. The picture above shows clearly how difficult it must have been for any army to storm the fortification. One wonders how were the provisions, specially water, supplied at this location. In fact, one wonders how did anyone ever get to the top of the 600-ft rock? So I started reading this on-line version of the book with much fascination, but was disappointed that large chunks - whole paragraphs - have been redacted or deleted by someone. It would have been nice if the original book was left as it is - and let the readers make their own judgements. In this picture, the building in front could be the masjid of Saadatullah Khan.
