Digital Rare Book :
A short guide to the cave temples of Elura
By Shamsul Ulama, Syed Ali Bilgrami
Reprinted by H.Plumber at The Lawrence Asylum Press, Madras - 1898
Thanks to Nitin Bhagawat for reminding to post on Ellora.
Was there 2yrs ago...super place..
This is beautiful !
The picture is that of Kailash Temple at Ellora, whch marked the zenith of Rock-cut architecture.
It was carved in the 2nd half of the 8th cent AD by Rashtrakut dynasty. The trench was 200' long and a 100' high.
Mind boggling, 20 million tons of rock was removed out of living rock to carve out this temple.
Structure was finished with white Gesso (to make distinct from background rock) and was built from top down with 'finishing' done at every stage to avoid necessity of scaffolding later.
