very interesting

is this dyeing with natural colors or had chemicals made their presence felt by 1830? synthetic indigo came later, if i remember correctly. Also, by now, i am intrigued further and would love to know how you have this delicious collection of rare finds??

Sunaina Suneja : Whatever I post on RBSI is freely available on the Net. The idea here is to introduce a new subject and hopefully a rare find everyday...and provide a context for a well-rounded discussion to the many incredibly articulate members to share their knowledge, bias and perspectives of history.

@Sunaina: Germany started manufacturing synthetic indigo around I World War, therefore the prices of natural indigo crashed. Champaran in Bihar was one of the major centres of Indigo cultivation.

The Champaran Satyagrah of 1916 was actually Gandhiji's very first foray into non-violent confrontation - Satyagrah. Not many know this but there was an English gentleman or more aptly a clergyman called C F Andrews who was a close friend of Gandhiji and was with him during the Champaran Satyagrah. @RBSI please post something on C F Andrews and his relationship with Gandhiji

@Frank : Andrews was the only person who called Gandhiji - Mohan . And Gandhi called him Charlie.

yep.

@Sandhya...actually according to wikipedia it is said that Gandhiji called him by another nickname too, which stood for his initials CFA - viz Christ's Faithful Apostle !!!

thanks for this link!
