My favorite tactic was putting cobras or other venomous snakes into pots and chucking them over to the other side. Biological warfare!! (Don't remember the reference for this; sorry.)
Correct me if I am wrong...Swami Vivekananda in response to one of Oppert's paper on lingam symbology came out with an arguement of Vedic sacrificial post as the origin of Shiva Linga.
