Shekar : If this version is indeed true....wouldnt it mean that we have been fed one side of the story all along...and as a consequence politicized the entire incident ! It makes me wonder...how much of the celebrated victimhood of India is actually based on facts....
What you say is what bothers me most. Had you not posted this book I would never have even considered the possibility. One should really examine the "victimhood". People who are hell bent on perpetuating prejudices exist at both ends of the spectrum. To steer clear of them is really a challenge. Second is we should never idolise or daemonise (except Hitler) historical personages because they were real people and may have acted stupidly and irrationally. Incidentally, I am changing Aristotle's definition of Man as the most rational animal. What he should have said is that "Man is the most irrational animal!". But you can excuse him as we have the benefit of 2500 years of more history than him!!
"stories like this" in my comment refer to the story that is the subject matter of the book (Gaznavi+Jaipal) and not Gaznavi+Malik ("slave to the slave"?)
Does the word Ghulam have a connotation other than slave? I find it very surprising that slaves should rise to become rulers anywhere in the world especially in India when the so-called "slave dynasty" ruked in India for close to 200 years and Razia Sultana a woman was actually in power for a few years who had another handsome slave for a friend. Subuktagin Ghazanavi, Muhammed Ghazanavi's father was also a slave. It was perhaps the news that a slave had become king prompted Jaipal to raid Ghazani in anticipation of an easy victory over a slave.
@Sushil Kumar : Did U mean all the sects including Shias,Sunnis, ahmadiyas etc etc... ??
That maybe true...but I don't see that brotherhood in this century atleast !!
