The word "India" in "India Rubber" may mislead us to think that the rubber is peculiarly Indian. Nothing of the sort. The history of rubber is traced to 18th century and not beyond and was first seen to be used by "Indians" of South America. This is another instance of commodification of a natural product (like tea, coffee, sugar-cane - all used in the same concoction!) and the advent of mono-culture agriculture. The rubber has found amazing Industrial and daily practical uses (besides making rubber stamps!) and unlike tea and coffee and cocoa. The rubber tree was perhaps brought to India around the same time it was found in South America and Africa. I doubt if "rubber" has a Sanskrit or Indian name at all.

Ah rubber stamps...will India ever get rid of them....'chapa maro'...
