Mountstuart Elphinstone was the quintessential renaissance British gentleman. A shrewd Administrator and Diplomat, an erudite Historian and Scholar and an Aesthete and Collector with truly exquisite taste in Furniture, Art and Architecture. As British Governor of Bombay from 1819 to 1827, he transformed Parrell, the neglected old country house of the British Governors. into an elegant new Palace of great charm and beauty.

Mountstuart Elphinstone was brilliant, and a (very distant) cousin. I am delighted to have another writer in the family tree....a lot nicer and more interesting than some of the nuts who fall out when I give the branches a bit of a shake!! I read his book about Kabul some years ago, when writing about Kipling's "Kim". :))
