Bridge of boats across the Ganges at Cawnpore - 1814

Watercolour of a bridge at Kanpur from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Cawnpore to Mohumdy Vol. IV' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r. 1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15.
Kanpur (Cawnpore), on the Ganges river, was visited by Lord Moira enroute from Calcutta to Delhi. The British had set up a cantonment approximately 2 miles northwest of Kanpur and was the scene of the Uprising of 1857. View of a bridge of boats across the Ganges at Cawnpore, with two elephants approaching each other. A European bungalow on the left and various temples and a ghat on the right. Inscribed below: 'Cawnpore. Bridge of Boats. Major Gilbert's House - on the right Saseea Ghaut.'

The leather tanneries there are the major contributors to this pollution. They have converted the river into a huge drain albeit very pious. Astonishingly, the Hindutva evangelists' haven't made any significant move in the direction of keeping this 'holy' river clean.

Apoorva Tiwari : Well said ! But then it might be easier to worship than to clean...
