Princep's Ghaut, Calcutta - 1851

A hand-coloured print of Princep's Ghat, Calcutta, from the Fiebig Collection: Views of Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. James Princep (1799-1840) was a scholar and scientist who decoded early Indian scripts and translated texts which enabled further studies of ancient Indian History. He was well regarded in Calcutta and on his death at the age of forty, whilst on a trip to England, a site was chosen at Coolie Ghat for a monument to be raised in his honour. Taking the form of a Palladian Porch and Colonnade at the top of a flight of steps, Princep's Ghaut became one of the main landing-stages, together with Chandpaul Ghaut, for the arrival of important visitors to Calcutta.
