my two bits on the Indian contribution to mesmerism (which evolved into hypnotism, eventually) -
Franz Mesmer proposed something called 'animal magnetism', which formed the basis of mesmerism. its evolution into hypnotism was mediated by the goa-born priest, abbe faria, who introduced its basic principles and techniques to the paris intelligensia.
(for those who have read 'the count of monte cristo' by alexander dumas - the character of abbe faria is directly inspired by the persona of this goa-born priest, who came from an ex-hindu chinoy/shenoy lineage of temple accountants, who were converted to christianity by the portuguese).
abbe faria took the idea of mesmerism and proposed that it was not 'animal magnetism' that caused the altered state of consciousness, but the power of suggestion - this mesmerization through the power of suggestion came to be referred to as 'oriental hypnotism'. will durant refers to this in his 'story of civilizations', explicitly making the suggestion that "...Hypnotism as therapy seems to have originated among Indians, who often took their sick to the temples to be cured by hypnotic suggestion. The Englishmen who introduced hypnotherapy into England — Braid, Esdaile, and Elliotson — "undoubtedly got their ideas, and some of their experience, from contact with India."..."
(of course, the basic principles of the indian mystical concept of 'indra-jaal', or the concept of deliberately induced illusion/illusive-matrix, probably had a lot to do with it).
a striking example of suggestion comes from abbe faria's own early life, when he (who had recently come to europe with his father) was preaching a sermon to the european elite, which included queen mary of portugal herself.
the young abbe was tongue-tied at the pulpit at the sight of such powerful personae in the audience. observing his nervousness, his father whispered to him in a konkani (goan language) phrase, worthy of the kung-fu panda - 'these are just vegetables - cut them!'
this simple suggestive imagery conveyed to the abbe by his father instantly altered the way he perceived the event, and he went on to deliver a striking sermon that went a long way in cementing his reputation in europe.
this same abbe faria went on to convert mesmerism into hypnosis (which eventually evolved over the centuries into sciences of influence like NLP).
the statue of abbe faria hypnotizing a young girl is still to be seen at the heart of panjim city in goa, india.
-------
as a historical background to the abbe's life and his (and his father's exceptional grasp on human consciousness), we have to understand that the region of goa was the erstwhile (though declining, due to the persecuting portuguese influence) epicenter of the lineage of the advaita philosophy - the principle of non-duality, which believes in the oneness and integration of the various aspects/streams of consciousness/being).
the region of goa had the privilege of being the location for the ancient monastery of the uber-guru (the great gaudapada, the composer of the 'madukya karika) of the foremost exponents of non-duality - the adi shankaracharya).
-------
this, in short, is the history of how it all happened...
