Dravidian Gods in Modern Hinduism : A study of the local and village Deities of Southern India.
By Wilber Theodore Elmore
Published by The Author, Hamilton, New York - 1915.
Dravidian Temple Gopurams are truly beautiful. They are painted with such bright colours. A true celebration of piety !!!
While this book does dig very deep into the forgotten corners of hinduism, i cannot help but feel sceptical about the intent with which it might have been commissioned and published, thanks to the tone the author adopts (was made to adopt perhaps) throughout the text.
Nevertheless it is an invaluable piece of work researching rigorously into an area that has seldom been addressed before or since.
Abhishek :You hit right on the nail ! Most of the books written between 1775-1925 by Western writers have this patronizing or disparaging tone in their writings. But it is necessary to look beyond this irritating tenor....only because it is well researched and presented in a cohesive fashion suitable for study.
Abhishek : You should read the Preface by Max Muller on Sri Ramakrishna's book above.....and this man is revered in India !
Also we should read the letter Maxmueller wrote to his sister. I am searching for the link to post here...
@RBSI - yes the tone is quite condescending, and to go beyond that into the text takes some real effort!
